about

This song also originated as poem Jack wrote in high school shortly after the passing of his grandmother, Helen, and his grandfather Robert about a month later. It's a conversation between the two of them as Helen lays in hospice care. They reminisce about the life they've built together, the children they raised and the grandchildren they've known. They think back to their first date, where Robert asked Helen to an event only after the woman he was originally slated to go with backed out. Helen would come up with these goofy nicknames for family members, like twig or branch, hence the metaphor of "We grew healthy trees and their branches have spread." It's not only a metaphor for a growing family, it's also part of Helen's nickname scheme. This song was Jack's way of dealing with the first major loss of his mature life.
